Screencastify started as a Chrome screen recorder for teachers, and it's still one of the most popular tools in schools. Screencastify's prices drop sharply with yearly billing, so its Starter plan costs almost the same as Seedling over a year, while monthly billing costs more than twice as much.

## What Screencastify does well

Screencastify's strengths come from its education roots. It lets you add questions and polls to videos, request and collect videos from other people, and on the Pro plan you get captions and transcripts, translations and voiceovers, AI editing and a teleprompter that can write a script for you. The Enterprise and EDU plan adds LMS integrations, central admin controls and Google and Microsoft single sign-on, which is why so many schools and districts use it.

The free plan is also generous on length, with recordings of up to 30 minutes, although you can only keep 10 videos unless you invite colleagues to earn more.

## Where Screencastify can feel limiting at work

The things that make Screencastify good for classrooms matter less when you're explaining a bug to a developer or answering a customer question. The Starter plan caps each recording at 60 minutes, which is rarely a problem, but self-serve plans are limited to five members, so a growing team will need to talk to sales. You'll also need the Pro plan for captions and transcripts, which matters if your viewers watch without sound.

## How Loom compares

Loom is the better-known choice for work, and it's more complete than Screencastify for team communication. Even its free plan includes transcripts, captions, comments and viewer insights, and the Business plan removes the length limit and adds 4K video, password protection and custom branding. Loom also has desktop and mobile apps, so you can record outside Chrome. The trade-off is price, since at $18 to $24 per person per month it costs more than either Screencastify or Seedling once you're paying.
